Tarka and Kwa Nonqaba township tour

Duration: 3 hour(s) - Location: Mossel Bay
Tarka is situated on the north-facing hill above the harbor town of Mossel Bay on the Garden Route with probably the most spectacular sea view of any township in South Africa. This historic village was built of sandstone a housed a Cape Coloured / Cape Malay community ever since.

Kwanonqaba is a Xhosa word with three different definitions by the community over the last 7 years. "Place in a Hollow," "Place of Need" and "Place without a View" is separated by its main road into a post-apartheid and an apartheid section of the township. You will experience the differences between the sections of the township that developed during these two eras. The people are often praised by visitors for their joviality despite their circumstances.

We offer morning or afternoon tours and drive through Tarka where you can enjoy the views of the beautiful bay while our guide shares with you the history and lifestyle of the local people, the challenges and progress of the community and answer your questions.

We proceed to Kwanonqaba where the differences between the pre-1994 and post-apartheid township are obvious. Share in the achievements and challenges of a community that will not give up despite a very high rate of unemployment.
